Securing the Unseen: How One Startup Is Reimagining Community Safety in Uganda

In many Ugandan neighborhoods, the sound of a siren is rare, but the fear of insecurity is not. Across both urban and rural communities, home break-ins, theft, and slow emergency response times are common realities. For many, especially in low-income areas, access to reliable security systems remains out of reach. Traditional security measures, such as private guards and surveillance systems, are often financially out of reach for many Ugandans. This gap has left numerous communities vulnerable to crimes like burglaries and home invasions. In a country where trust among neighbors still holds deep value, there is a rising need for solutions that are both affordable and rooted in community. According to the Uganda Police Force's Annual Crime Report for 2023, there were 228,074 reported criminal cases, highlighting the persistent threat to safety across the country.

In response to these challenges, a group of innovative Ugandan engineers developed Yunga Technologies, a community-based digital network aimed at enhancing neighborhood security. Yunga, meaning "to connect" in Luganda, links households within a 20km radius, enabling them to communicate instantly during emergencies. When a security breach occurs, residents can trigger an alarm that notifies all connected neighbors and the nearest police post, facilitating rapid response. Since its launch, Yunga has protected over 4,000 households, prevented more than 600 crimes, established networks in over 60 communities across Uganda and initiated pilots in South Africa.

In 2023, Yunga's innovative approach earned it the Royal Academy of Engineering's Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, underscoring its potential to revolutionize community security. Residents have reported increased peace of mind since adopting Yunga. One user, Milly, shared, "I was disturbed by robberies in my home for a long time, but after getting Yunga, the cases reduced, and now I have peace in my home, knowing that someone is watching out for me". Looking ahead, Yunga's mission is clear: to leverage community trust and technology to enhance security across Sub-Saharan Africa.

With plans to connect one million homes and protect five million lives by 2030, Yunga Technologies is poised to redefine how communities approach safety.
