Turning Passion into Profit: Isaac Odongo's Organic Roots Hustle
Isaac Odong’s journey from struggling NGO worker to thriving entrepreneur is a true testament to resilience and growth. Over the past five years, his company has risen to prominence as a leader in innovative agricultural products, driving growth and sustainability across the region. However, Isaac's journey was not always this smooth. Before joining the Youth Startup Academy Uganda (YSAU) in 2022, Isaac struggled with the business side of his passion for farming. Financial management, pitching, and operational structure were major hurdles. Lacking a clear vision, he was relying on trial-and-error methods, limiting his growth potential.
But everything changed when he joined YSAU. The program provided Isaac with the practical skills he needed to tackle his business challenges—from creating financial projections to refining product packaging and improving sales strategies. The lessons he learned helped him streamline operations, optimize expenses, and develop a more strategic approach to marketing.
When Isaac first joined YSAU, Organic Roots earned 14 million UGX ($3,784) annually. Within a year of applying the program's lessons, his revenue grew to 45 million UGX ($12,162), and by 2023, it soared to 149 million UGX ($40,270). The business achieved financial stability, breaking even and saving 1.3 – 1.4 million UGX ($3,784) per month. Isaac also expanded his operations, acquiring two tricycles and a motorcycle to improve logistics.
Isaac’s personal life also flourished. He now earns a monthly salary of 550,000 UGX ($149), supporting his household and providing a better quality of life. Looking ahead, Isaac aims to make Organic Roots a top food exporter in Uganda, targeting $1 million in revenue by 2029. He plans to build a state-of-the-art processing unit and create jobs to foster community development.
Isaac credits YSAU for providing the confidence, clarity, and resilience that has helped him navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Despite setbacks, such as funding rejections, he remains steadfast in his determination to grow organically and create lasting impact. His mantra, “Keep pushing, it will be better,” drives his journey forward.
Isaac's story is a powerful reminder that with the right guidance, a clear vision, and unwavering persistence, anyone can turn their dreams into reality.
